Shofuso- Japanese House and Garden

This documentary produced for the Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia takes the viewer on a detailed tour of the traditional Japanese house and landscape garden known as Shofuso, located in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park.

Subject matter experts explain the architectural features of the house and garden and the philosophical and cultural underpinnings that create its unique style.

The program allows viewers to see areas of the garden that are not open to the public, and shows its changing character through all four seasons.

An original music track was recorded for the documentary using traditional Japanese instruments that include koto and shakuhachi.

A detailed demonstration and explanation of the Japanese art of the tea ceremony provide viewers with a deeper appreciation for the culture of Japan.
